Papillonkia started trading as a Limited Company in 2014 and in the time that has passed we have seen the trends change with which the most coveted designer and designer bag is. However, there are some designer brands that never seem to go out of fashion. Their longevity comes down to a rich history of quality, innovation or style – or even all three. You know the brands we mean, we have shined the spotlight on these fashion giants in our blog – Chanel of course who are always a classic, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and (a controversial choice for some) – Mulberry.
In our blog post today we want to talk about another favourite – Chloé. Papillonkia team member Charlotte loves Chloé as do many of our Papillonkia customers. Charlotte says she thinks the designs are “fresh and modern whilst ensuring they are still classy and sophisticated but with a trendy edge.” She’s not alone. Celebrities from Sienna Miller to Katie Holmes and Clémence Poésy are said to be firm fans and have all have worn the brand.
Chloé is relatively new compared to some of the powerhouses that hail from history of long ago… Gaby Aghion founded the French fashion house in 1952 and then Jacques Lenoir came on board a year later as her partner. The vision was to create luxury prêt-à-porter – something that had never been done by luxury fashion houses before. The norm was that luxury fashion houses would only produce Haute Couture clothing for the small percent of people that had the money to pay for it. Everyone else, even those with money (but not quite enough for Haute Couture) were left to wear cheap imitations.
Chloé were clearly on to a good thing with their luxury ready to wear as lots of fashion houses of note followed suit!
Chloé went from strength to strength, staying ahead of the curve and worked with designers like Graziella Fontana. In 1966 Karl Largerfield was the main designer and Chloé could count Jackie O and Grace Kelly as some of their notable clientele! In 1971 Chloé opened up its first boutique – 3 rue Gribeauval in Paris. Then in 1985. the company is acquired by the Richemont group.
The brand went on to work with talented artistic directors like Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo and in 2002 they launched their first line of leather goods including handbags! Hooray!
The Paddington bag by Chloé was one of the first of the ‘it-bags’. And ever since Chloé has delighted us with an array of modern and sophisticated bags from the Paraty and Marcie bags to the Faye bag.
There is of course also See by Chloé that also sells gorgeous handbags too – these are at a lower price point and geared at a “younger” audience.
As of 2017 Natacha Ramsay-Levi is the designer of their new ready to wear, bags and accessories. So far she has brought savvy and strong looks that leave critics impressed. Keep up the good work Natacha.
